Hormonal acne treatment at FaceCrime Skin Labs in Fairview, Vancouver, is a consultation-led approach that looks at both internal drivers and skin care, with a naturopathic team within a skin clinic at 1765 W 8th Ave, Unit 105.

Most people who come to us with adult acne have already tried many approaches to healing their acne. Cleansers, actives, a routine rebuilt three times, possibly a course of something stronger years ago that worked until it didn't.

By that point the frustrating part isn't the breakouts. It's the sense that something is driving them that nobody has looked at yet, and that you're being handed another product instead of an explanation.

That suspicion is often worth taking seriously. Adult acne is rarely just skin deep. There's often something driving it beneath the surface. We're in Fairview, a block from Kitsilano. Book online or call (604) 676-1808.

Our Approach

Skin reflects internal physiology. That belief is the reason this clinic exists in the shape it does.

FaceCrime was built with a naturopathic team and a skin clinic under one roof, because treating the surface while ignoring what sits behind it tends to mean managing the same thing indefinitely.

Neither half is the whole answer. The internal work takes time, and in the meantime skin still needs care. Both running together is the point.

About Adult and Hormonal Acne

Adult and hormonal acne is acne that often continues or starts after the teenage years and may track with hormone shifts, stress, sleep, or digestion. At FaceCrime in Vancouver, assessment looks at those patterns before any plan is made.

Acne in adulthood often behaves differently from acne in your teens. It tends to sit lower on the face, along the jaw, chin, and neck. It can be deeper and slower to settle. And for many people it moves in a pattern, flaring at particular points in the month, or through periods of poor sleep and sustained stress.

Those patterns are the interesting part, because they're information. Hormones, stress physiology, gut function, and inflammation all interact with skin, and where acne appears and when it worsens can suggest which of those is worth a closer look. None of that is diagnostic on its own. It's where a proper assessment starts rather than where it finishes.

Why a good routine sometimes isn't enough

Topical care does real work. It can support the skin barrier, help with congestion, and make a visible difference to how skin looks and feels. What it can't do is change something that's being driven internally, which is why people describe hitting a ceiling: real improvement up to a point, then a plateau, then a flare that arrives regardless of how carefully the routine is followed.

That ceiling is usually the signal that the conversation needs to widen. Not that the routine was wrong, but that it was being asked to do a job it was never going to finish on its own.

Adult acne can have a range of contributing factors and responds differently from person to person. Nothing on this page is a diagnosis or a promise of a particular result. What's appropriate for you is determined during an individual assessment with a licensed practitioner.

Two Halves of the Same Conversation

Internal and external work run in parallel here, because each one covers what the other cannot.

Inside

Naturopathic assessment

A licensed Naturopathic Doctor looks at what may be contributing internally. History, cycle where relevant, sleep, stress, digestion, and current medications.

Lab work is discussed where it will genuinely add to the picture. That's information gathering, not a diagnosis by itself.

Outside

Skin care now

While internal work takes shape, skin still needs considered care. Waiting months for things to settle while skin stays inflamed helps nobody, and scarring is far easier to prevent than to address later.

What's appropriate on the surface is assessed with your skin on the day.

Working With Your Other Providers

We work alongside conventional care rather than instead of it. If you already see a family doctor or a dermatologist, that's useful and we'd encourage you to keep them involved. Different approaches answer different questions, and many people do best with both.

It also means you are not asked to abandon anything that's working. If a topical routine is holding part of the line, we build around it rather than clearing the table for the sake of it.

  • A licensed Naturopathic Doctor and skin practitioners in one clinic
  • Assessment before recommendations, every time
  • Lab work used as information gathering, not as a formality
  • Skin care planned around active breakouts rather than in spite of them
  • Honest conversation about what's realistic, including when it's slow

The Process

01

First Consultation

Longer than most appointments, usually 45 to 60 minutes. History, patterns, what you've already tried and how your skin responded to it.

02

Assessment

A look at your skin, and a conversation about lab work if your practitioner thinks it would add something useful to the picture.

03

Plan

An individual plan, which may involve internal work, skin care, or both. What it includes depends entirely on your assessment.

04

Follow-Up

Skin work isn't a single appointment. Follow-up is planned with you so you understand the shape of it before you begin.

These are services available at FaceCrime. Whether any of them suits you, and when, is decided with a practitioner who has looked at your skin. None of these is claimed to treat acne.

Hormonal Acne FAQs

What causes hormonal acne in adults?

There's rarely a single cause. Hormonal fluctuation, stress physiology, sleep, digestion, inflammation, and genetics can all play a part, and they interact differently in different people. Working out which threads matter for you is what an individual assessment is for.

Why does my acne appear along my jaw and chin?

Adult acne commonly presents lower on the face, and many people notice it tracks with their cycle or with stressful periods. That pattern is useful information for a practitioner, though it's a starting point for a conversation rather than a conclusion by itself.

How is a naturopathic approach different from what I've already tried?

It generally starts further back, with a longer history and a look at what might be contributing rather than at the skin alone. That's a different question from the one topical care answers, not a better one. Both have value, and plenty of people benefit from running them together.

Will I need lab work?

Sometimes. It's discussed where a practitioner thinks it would genuinely add to the picture rather than ordered as a matter of course. If you've had recent bloodwork, bring it, as it may be usable.

Can I have facials or peels while I'm breaking out?

That depends on your skin on the day, which is why it's assessed rather than booked blind. FaceCrime offers chemical peels and laser skin treatment among other options, and whether any of them are appropriate for you, and when, is decided with a practitioner who has looked at your skin.

How long before I see a change?

This varies a great deal, and we'd rather say that plainly than quote a number that may not hold for you. Skin generally moves slowly, internal work more slowly still. Your practitioner will talk through what's realistic for your situation at the first appointment.

Is any of this covered by MSP or extended benefits?

Naturopathic appointments are generally not covered by regular MSP, although some patients may have limited MSP supplementary benefits depending on eligibility. Many extended health plans include a naturopathic allowance, so it's worth checking your specific plan. We can confirm appointment costs up front and provide receipts or direct billing where available.
